At Pathways to Potential, we believe in the power of play as a way to foster growth and connection. The week between Christmas and the new year can feel slow, but it’s the perfect opportunity for some engaging activities that can help kids develop essential skills while having fun! Here are three creative activities for the holiday break, complete with material lists and instructions:

1.    Sensory Scavenger Hunt

Skills we work on: Observation, Fine Motor Skills, Language Development

Materials Needed:

·      Small bins or containers

·      Various textured items (sandpaper, cotton balls, leaf, etc.)

·      A scavenger hunt checklist (create your own with pictures or words).

Instructions: Fill each bin with one type of textured item. Create a checklist of items for your child to find or feel (e.g., “something rough,” “something fluffy”). Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard, asking your child to collect the items listed.

2.     DIY Holiday Cards

Skills we work on: Creativity, Social Skills, Fine Motor Control

Materials Needed:

·      Blank cards or paper

·       Scissors

·       Glue

·       Markers

·       Stickers

·       Other craft supplies you have (glitter, fabric, etc.).

Instructions: Let your child decorate the cards any way they like. You can offer ideas or themes (winter wonderland, family memories). Once completed, deliver the cards to friends or family, encouraging your child to share their artwork. This promotes social interaction.

3.     Themed Mini Obstacle Course

Skills we work on: Gross Motor Skills, Problem-Solving, Following Directions

Materials Needed:

·      Pillows

·       Chairs

·       hula hoops

·       Any other household items that can be used safely.

Instructions: Create a mini obstacle course using items around the house. For example, jump over pillows, crawl under chairs, and hop through hula hoops. Give your child simple directions to navigate the course and time their performance to encourage improvement.

Engaging in these activities not only strengthens vital skills but also helps in creating beautiful memories with your child. Enjoy this wonderful week together, and don’t forget to cherish each giggle and smile!
