Client Success Story: How Pathways to Potential helped a non-verbal child develop communication skills (with family's permission)

Child reading with parents

Here's a success story we love sharing. How Pathways to Potential helped a non-verbal child develop communication skills.

When a bright-eyed 5-year-old joined our Pathways to Potential family, they were non-verbal and struggling to express basic needs. Mealtimes were especially challenging – imagine not being able to tell anyone what you want to eat.

We started with a personalized communication plan, introducing picture cards and a tablet-based communication app. Progress was slow at first, but determination shone through.

The breakthrough moment? Using the tablet to ask for a favorite snack. From there, a world of communication began to open up.

Requesting toys, expressing the need for a break, and even forming simple sentences became possible.

Now, a year later, this child combines vocal approximations with their device, and their vocabulary grows daily. Recently, they surprised everyone by signing "I love you" to mom – a moment she describes as "pure magic."

This journey reminds us why we do what we do. Every child has a voice; sometimes they just need a different way to express it. With patience, the right tools, and a supportive team, incredible progress is possible.
