Creating a healthy bedtime routine for your child with autism can be a challenge for many different reasons. At Pathways 2 Potential, we often emphasize the importance of structured routines to promote better sleep hygiene and overall well-being.
To help your child wind down, consider establishing a consistent schedule that includes calming activities before bed. Start with a regular bedtime and a series of steps leading up to it, such as dimming the lights, reducing screen time at least 30-60 minutes before bed, and introducing alternative calming strategies like reading, listening to soft music, or engaging in quiet sensory activities. If electronics use is necessary for your child, limit and specify their screen time to relaxing content only, like soothing nature videos or music videos with a static picture. Visual schedules can help your child understand and anticipate the transition from active play to sleep. Here is a free resource that ThatOTandBA posted on Teachers Pay Teachers:
Remember, patience is key; it may take time to find the right balance, but with consistency and understanding, your child can enjoy a restful night's sleep while still feeling secure and calm.
